What’s wrong with your video?

It all begins with an idea.

There’s a million ways to produce a video and most video creators just shove a bunch of information into the video timeline hoping it sticks. BAD IDEA.

Let me cut through the chase: Don’t shove a hundred pounds of content into the 10-pound bad. People have limited attention spans, and they’ll never stick around for your important 5-7 minute video — unless it’s earth shattering content.

Viewers don’t need to hear all the information about your project. They really just need 3 important key takeaways. If they want more information, they can certainly find it on your website.

Here’s my storytelling mantra: Open and close with a poem and make three points in the middle. Yep, that’s it. Keep it simple.

It’s like the friendly neighbor who wants to show you a hundred pictures of their recent vacation. Sure, that’s nice, but no one will remember those 100 pictures — but they’ll likely remember 3 of them.

Too much information running through my brain, too much information driving me insane.
— The Police

The song “Too much information” from The Police always resonated with me. Maybe it’s because of the vintage 80’s vibe — but the lyrics are simple and memorable, and true to the core.

In today’s chaotic world where everyone is scrolling on their phones taking in all kinds of information, it’s insanity after a while. Baseline reality is people don’t remember everything they read or watch.

Your chances of having a video that sticks greatly improves if it’s not muddled with too much information. You’ll thank me later.

When you’re thinking about creating a video, do yourself a favor and come up with the three most important key messages that support your story. You’ll be tempted to come up with 10 key messages, but your average viewer isn’t going to remember it all. You need to focus your focus. Be lean and mean.

It all begins with an idea.

It all begins with an idea. Maybe you want to launch a business. Maybe you want to turn a hobby into something more. Or maybe you have a creative project to share with the world. Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.

Don’t worry about sounding professional. Sound like you. There are over 1.5 billion websites out there, but your story is what’s going to separate this one from the rest. If you read the words back and don’t hear your own voice in your head, that’s a good sign you still have more work to do.

Be clear, be confident and don’t overthink it. The beauty of your story is that it’s going to continue to evolve and your site can evolve with it. Your goal should be to make it feel right for right now. Later will take care of itself. It always does.
